In General

Sorry i’m late to the stage piano discussion, the reason piano sounds got all corny in the 80’s is because of the Yamaha DX7, particularly the “E. Piano 1″ patch. After doing a little wikiing I think I have found the best example of this musical travesty in action, Luther Vandross.

Dx7 was one of the first digital synths to use Frequency Modulation synthesis which were good for ringy vibes like sounds or bell sounds with a lot of attack and not much sustain. Analog synthesizers that came before the dx7 couldn’t do very realistic bell sounds because the oscillators had some pitch instability

On a completely unrelated note the wikipedia article abut the rhodes turns up a weird fact:
The Army Air Corps piano was invented during World War II by Harold Rhodes in an effort to provide a piano that injured servicemen could build and play while in bed.
