I was thinking about how Storey will get her presents at my folks’ on christmas eve, then mine on the morning of, then have to go back to fayette-nam later that afternoon, not leaving a lot of time for play-play-playing. So after work, when I picked her up yesterday, I let her blow all the money I made at my (first!) solo gig the other night. We went to the game store that sells used games and dvds. She picked out 3 gameboy games - Winx Club, Muppets, and Beauty and the Beast, and 3 dvds - Muppets Take Mannhattan, Scooby Doo (movie), and Dr. Seuss / Cat in the Hat Adventures, which is a muppet interpretation done by the Henson Camp.
Little Chica was full on stoked!
Since what I wrote below, she told me just kind of at random that she believed in santa. I said, "Cool." Again, no lies / no disses.
I take her around to look at the lights, and we have a tree. I like the ’spirit’ of winter solstice / christmas / whatever. I like the traditions and their pagan roots. The stories about people going and paying off lay-a-ways and giving to the poor make me tear up. That ’spirit’ is important, i think. I’ll take what I want from their traditions. Why not? Presents rule. That shit is fun, and I love giving her a bunch of useless crap that she sees magic in. One day she’ll put her magic in guitars, and microphones, or maybe typewriters. Perhaps paintbrushes and canvases. Probably all of them and some badass stuff us old fuckers have no idea about.
We can have a blast without me ever having to lie to her.
You can absolutely make your own traditions that saddle up next to the Big Everything that’s out there this time of year. In fact, I don’t think you can avoid doing so. Every family has their own little versions of traditions, even within the same faith or culture. Depression and Aversion can become the tradition. They almost did for me, once upon a time. F that S. Have fun. Life’s too short.
They got one thing right, I think: there must have been some magic in that old hat we found. To me, there is magic in the season. I think it is vital that we celebrate our interconnectedness with the Earth. Just as the seasons, we are dying towards rebirth. Every year. Every day. Every moment. Transcendance. It’s what all the stories are about. Life on Earth. And its Potential.
If you want it, it’s yours. If not, it’s just an old hat/boring.

In preperation for Astoria’s 9 day visit for Winter Break (!!!!), I put the tree up yesterday. Decorated and urrthang. I also bought presents for her, which is always fun. Looking like me and wearing a Slayer shirt pretty much gets you the little girl’s toy isle to yourself.
I don’t perpetuate the Santa Claus thing. I can’t bring myself to Lie to her. I treat the whole thing the same as any religious issues. I don’t tell her what to believe, but I don’t go around dissing anything either. She knows she can ask me anything. I’ll answer her to the best of my ability and never lie.
She’s 6 now. When they are younger, you can get em pretty much anything. I mean, it’s still like that, and she’s always greatful for whatever she gets, but I put pressure on myself to get something that will blow her away. I don’t have much disposable income these last several years, but so far I’ve done pretty well. Last year, I hit it out of the park. I got her the normal Barbies she likes and the Zoobles and Littlest Pet Shop playsets and whatnot, but the POW! was the 36" hot pink trampoline. She. Never. Saw. It. Coming.
This year the Left Field gift is one of these karaoke mike/stands (Hello Kitty) that has an amplified speaker and earbuds. It runs off an mp3 player, so I got her a little 4GB duder to load up with the Demi Levato, Miley Cyrus/Hanna Montana, Selena Gomez, Tom T. Hall (!), and DIO(!!!!) that she likes to sing along with all the time.
She is constantly singing to herself while she plays, so I think this will be a good suprise. She has a guitar and a keyboard, but they don’t get a ton of use. Given her inclination to sing, I think she gonna be all about Rocking The Mic.

Justin - I thought that photo of your dad was you, but taken with one of those instamatic filters on it or something. I’m sure you’ve been hearing it your whole life, but it’s uncanny how much yall look alike. Glad to hear he’s improving. Been thinking of you and your family, brother.

If you get a present from me that I wrapped, there’s gonna be some duct tape involved. Fact.
